Wisatawan yang lebih suka berlibur sendirian dikenal sebagai backpacker atau solo traveler. Backpacker pada umumnya bepergian dengan menggunakan ransel. Sebagian ada yang menyebut mereka sebagai budget traveler (wisatawan yang kegiatannya dibatasi oleh alokasi dana). Semua backpacker membuat itinerary (rencana perjalanan ke sejumlah tempat wisata) sendirian. Backpacker juga menghitung biaya-biaya yang mungkin muncul selama liburan ke tempat wisata favorit mereka. Kelebihan menjadi seorang backpacker yang utama adalah kebebasan mengelola waktu liburan. Backpacker bisa dengan leluasa menentukan itinerary, rute perjalanan, jadwal harian, lama waktu liburan ke obyek wisata, dan hal-hal kecil lainnya yang tidak mungkin dilakukan bila bergabung dengan tour agent. Karena jadwal liburan ditentukan sendiri, penjelajahan area liburan pun bisa dilakukan lebih luas dan sepuas hati backpacker.

Menjadi seorang backpacker juga memungkinkan Anda menangkap moment terbaik di tempat wisata terindah di Indonesia. Sunrise, sunset, debur ombak, festival adat, dan upacara sakral yang jarang dilakukan merupakan beberapa gambar tempat wisata yang langka untuk didapatkan. Backpacker bisa dengan mudah mengatur waktu liburan dan bersenang-senang di tempat wisata favorit mereka.

Oleh karena itu, setiap backpacker harus selalu mawas diri dalam perjalanan walaupun secara umum backpacker harus selalu bersikap ramah terhadap orang-orang yang baru dikenal. Fleksibel dan berpikiran terbuka adalah salah satu kunci sukses menjadi seorang backpacker.

Selain itu, backpacker juga harus siapkan dana cadangan kalau sewaktu-waktu muncul biaya yang diluar prediksi, misalnya cedera saat mendaki gunung. Kondisi di lapangan pun seringkali berbeda dari informasi yang didapatkan sebelumnya. Ada kalanya kawan sesama backpacker yang bergabung tidak sesuai dengan harapan Anda.
